Newbery Tower ribbing

Newbery Tower

Samples of the Newbery Tower's iconic ribbed concrete have been requested from the site by members of the MSA. Dr Robert Proctor, Lecturer, one of the sample recipients, gave us a detailed and elegant response to the question what was so special about the material used by Keppie Henderson & Partners?

Please note that the Skypark Shuttle Bus service has been suspended over the summer months. This is due to the small number of users reported in the last few weeks.

A full service will be reinstated on Monday 10 September 2012.

Students and members of staff requiring transport between the campus buildings may organise taxis through Alison Clark in reception (0141 353 4500 or ‘0’ from internal phones) who will keep a log of the number of journeys. We would be obliged if, where possible, taxis are shared by a number of staff and students at any one time.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

A live webcam stream is now available from this site so that you can view developments on the new building as they happen. See the web cam tab at the top of this page for two different camera views.

Newbery Tower demolition progress

The Newbery Tower is now completely down and the side of the Assembly Building is now being taken down, leaving the front facade and shell of the old 'Vic' intact.

Piling for the new building continues and construction of the new building will commence soon.  On 14th March Steven Holl's office will arrive in Glasgow to carry out testing on the concrete cladding and finishes for the new Building. This testing is critical to ensure the Holl office are happy with the samples.

Pictures are being posted on the GSA's dedicated set on Flickr and regularly via the GSA's twitter

BBC Scotland install time-lapse cameras focused on Phase 1 site

BBC Scotland have installed four time-lapse cameras focused on the Phase 1 site as part of a two year documentation of the demolition and build.

Footage from the cameras will form part of a documentary, directed by GSA alumnus Louise Lockwood, on the Steven Holl Building which will be broadcast in 2014.  Louise directed the BBC Scotland documentary on the Mackintosh Building as part of the centenary celebrations in 2009.

GSA Appoints contractor for Phase 1 site

The GSA has appointed Sir Robert McAlpine to undertake the demolition and construction for the Phase 1 project.

The project involves the demolition of the Newbery Tower, Foulis Building and selective demolition of the Assembly Building.

Work will commence in August 2011 and be completed in 2013.

Recent projects undertaken in Glasgow by Sir Robert McAlpine include the M74 link and the Glasgow 2014 Velodrome on London Road.
